Matadors gain first place in ACCAC with hard fought road win at Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, Ariz. – Arizona Western College men's basketball (19-6, 9-1) delivered a gutsy 82-73 victory over rival Eastern Arizona College on Wednesday night, outlasting the Gila Monsters in a tense conference clash fueled by a massive all-around performance from Marsai Mason. With the win, Arizona Western now moves into sole possesion of first place in the ACCAC standings.

The Matadors set the tone early, using relentless rebounding and tough defense to create separation in a back-and-forth opening half at Eastern Arizona's gym. Arizona Western surged ahead with a late first-half push, taking a 39-31 lead into the break as the intensity between the conference rivals ratcheted up. After the Gila Monsters cut the deficit to single digits in the second half, the Matadors responded with physical play and timely scoring, shifting momentum back on key possessions. With the pressure mounting in the closing minutes, Arizona Western relied on clutch baskets and composure at the free-throw line to put the game away.

Marsai Mason was the difference-maker, recording a statement double-double with 26 points, 18 rebounds and 3 steals, while knocking down 8-of-20 from the field and 9-of-14 from the line. Mason set the tone on both ends, including a late tip-in that stretched the lead to double digits and helped seal the rivalry win. Illiam Fevry provided key support with 14 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds in a team-high 36 minutes, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor. Off the bench, Boubacar Diatta was a force on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds and adding 7 points while hitting all three of his field goal attempts. Paora Winitana anchored the offense with 8 points, 8 rebounds and a team-best 5 assists.

The Matadors' toughness on the boards proved decisive, as they outrebounded Eastern Arizona 50-31 and notched 46 points in the paint to control the interior throughout the night. Critical moments included a late run sparked by Aaron Barton's layup and Mason's putback, which extended the lead to 77-67 with under two minutes left. Arizona Western also made key free throws down the stretch, with contributions from Mario Brunetto and Mason, to keep the Gila Monsters at bay. The victory showcased the Matadors' depth, resilience and ability to execute under maximum rivalry pressure in a hostile environment.
