Matadors cruise past Scottsdale for fourth win of the season
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College men's basketball team (4-2) delivered a commanding performance on the road Wednesday, defeating Scottsdale Community College 94-79. The Matadors jumped out to an early double-digit lead, never trailed, and overwhelmed the Artichokes with a dynamic offensive attack and stifling defense.
"Defensively, we showed toughness, but we gave up way too many threes," Isaacs said. "That's on us and it's fixable. The best part? We get another opportunity tomorrow to tighten the screws, clean up the details, and grow from tonight."
Arizona Western wasted no time asserting its dominance, exploding for 53 points in the first half to build an 11-point cushion at the break. That offensive outburst set the tone for the evening, with the Matadors' fast pace and unselfish ball movement keeping Scottsdale off balance. In the second half, Arizona Western's defense turned up the intensity—limiting the home side to 37 points and protecting the lead with relentless rim protection and disciplined execution.
"Proud of our guys tonight, we came into Scottsdale and handled business," Arizona Western head coach Kyle Isaacs said. "We played hard, we competed, and our offense finally started to click the way we know it can. I loved seeing the ball move, guys trusting each other, and our pace picking up."
The Matadors shot an outstanding 59.4 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from three-point range, showcasing one of their most efficient offensive nights of the season. Five players scored in double figures, part of a balanced attack that saw 18 assists on 38 made baskets. Arizona Western also controlled the glass, outrebounding Scottsdale with authority and swatting eight shots as a team.
Marsai Mason led the way with a powerful two-way performance, scoring 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, grabbing nine rebounds, dishing out three assists and swatting four shots—all in just 22 minutes. Mason's presence in the paint and around the rim set the tone on both sides of the floor.
Engel Gutierrez matched the team lead with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers, delivering timely buckets to keep the offense rolling. Boubacar Diatta provided a strong inside presence with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Aaron Barton filled the stat sheet with eight points and a team-high five assists.
Mario Brunetto added 11 points, including three three-pointers, off the bench, giving Arizona Western another offensive spark. The collective effort and depth were evident throughout, as the Matadors' balanced scoring and unselfish play prevented Scottsdale from ever threatening the lead.
"It felt great to be back playing in the Valley after a couple-year break," Isaacs said. "Awesome environment, awesome energy and our guys responded. We'll enjoy this one for a minute, but the job's not done. Another chance tomorrow to get better."
Arizona Western continues its road trip Thursday, Nov. 13, facing Glendale Community College. The game will also provide a milestone moment for Coach Isaacs and his Matadors.
