Gutierrez, deep bench lift Arizona Western to clutch 83-78 win at Utah State Eastern
PRICE, Utah - The Arizona Western College men's basketball team (3-1) pulled out a thrilling 83-78 win over Utah State Eastern on Friday night, responding to late-game pressure with clutch shooting and a balanced attack. The Matadors saw five players hit double figures and the bench pour in 44 points in a tense non-conference road battle that went down to the final minute.
Arizona Western jumped out early with crisp ball movement and hot shooting, building a 42-36 lead by halftime. The Eagles closed the gap in the second half but the Matadors never let the home team seize control, answering each run with timely buckets and relentless energy. Arizona Western's largest lead came midway through the first half at nine points, but Utah State Eastern clawed back to go ahead by six in the second before the Matadors regrouped.
With the outcome hanging in the balance in the closing minutes, the Matadors delivered. Nikola Aleksic knocked down a go-ahead three-pointer with 3:45 left to reclaim the lead at 70-69, and Paora Winitana followed with a midrange jumper to extend the margin to 75-69. Utah State Eastern answered with a burst, but Engel Gutierrez buried a deep three with 40 seconds left, pushing the lead to 80-75. When the Eagles trimmed the deficit to three, Aaron Barton calmly hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to clinch a statement road victory.
Engel Gutierrez led the charge with 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, and tallied three rebounds and three assists. Gutierrez's shot-making set the tone early and his late triple proved decisive.
Marsai Mason fueled the Matadors off the bench with 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting night, grabbing six rebounds and adding two blocks. Nikola Aleksic also scored 12 points in just seven minutes, hitting three critical threes. Mario Brunetto matched them with 12 points and four boards, providing a key first-half spark.
Steady play from Paora Winitana anchored the starting group, as he contributed eight points, five rebounds and a team-leading four assists. His clutch free throws and timely buckets helped Arizona Western withstand Utah State Eastern's final surge.
Arizona Western dominated the bench points battle 44-10 and out-rebounded the Eagles, turning 13 offensive boards into 18 second-chance points. The Matadors finished 9-for-22 from three (40.9 percent) and shot 70 percent from the free-throw line, including several under pressure down the stretch. Nine different players scored and the team committed just 11 turnovers, displaying unity and poise in a tight contest.
