RANGELY, Colo. – The Arizona Western College men's basketball team (2-1) set the tone early with a 72-62 road win over Colorado Northwestern Community College using relentless defense and balanced scoring to secure the victory.

The Matadors punched first and never blinked in a hostile opener on the road, building a 42–29 halftime cushion and weathering a late Spartans surge to close out a composed 72–62 win. A layup by Mario Brunetto stretched the advantage to 17 points at 48-31 early in the second half, matching the Matadors' largest lead of the night. Colorado Northwestern chipped away late, but Arizona Western's defensive pressure held strong, and key free throws down the stretch sealed the result.

Arizona Western's defense was the difference, as the team forced 17 turnovers and recorded 11 steals, turning those extra possessions into 22 points. The Matadors dominated the glass, collecting 43 rebounds—16 on the offensive end. Nine different Arizona Western players contributed to the scoring, and the bench added 31 points, showcasing the team's depth and collective effort.

"This was our first true road test, and the crowd was live," Arizona Western head coach Kyle Issacs said. "I'm proud of how tough and connected we were for 40 minutes. We talk about Hold the Rope; tonight, different guys grabbed it. Engel set the tone, Paora settled us, Matt made winning plays, and Aaron hit the big one.""

Paora Winitana anchored the inside with 11 points and 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, while Matt Anglo paced the Matadors with 12 points and hit four clutch free throws in the final minute. Aaron Barton delivered nine points and led the defensive charge with four steals. Mario Brunetto and Balla Kouyate rounded out the key contributions, helping Arizona Western control the paint and the tempo throughout.

The road swing rolls on with the Matadors bus heading for Price, Utah, for a showdown against Utah State Eastern on Friday and Snow College on Saturday.
