Windy, Wild Win

YUMA, Ariz. – Wind was gusting all over the field, and the Arizona Western College women’s soccer team (4-0 overall, 4-0 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) won its closest match of the young season. The Lady Mats took out Paradise Valley (3-1 overall, 3-1 ACCAC) 2-1 after repelling a late surge from PVCC.

AWC took a 1-0 lead in the first half thanks to Karen Melendrez. The sophomore curled a corner kick into the goal in the 36th minute.

The Lady Mats nursed a 1-0 lead until the 78th minute. Melendrez corralled a bouncing ball on the edge of the penalty area and played a short touch to Elizabeth Ephraim. Ephraim launched a high shot that dipped under the crossbar for her first goal of the season. The assist was Melendrez’s fourth.

Paradise Valley cut it to 2-1 off a rebound a few minutes later. In the 82nd minute, Mikayla Thomas put a free kick on goal from 40 yards out, but AWC’s Cyan Scott batted it aside. PVCC’s Haley German beat everyone to the ball and slotted it home.

Arizona Western closed the game out by shutting down one last, late gasp as time expired. The defense knocked down three straight Paradise Valley shots to preserve the one goal lead.

The Lady Mats will host South Mountain on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff get in for FREE!
