WBB: Arizona Western Outpaces Eastern Arizona

BOX SCORE

THATCHER, Ariz---The math played out favorably for the Arizona Western Lady Matadors (15-14 overall, 10-11 ACCAC) as they hoisted up 25 more shots and forced 15 more turnovers while picking up a nice road win over the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters (20-9 overall, 13-8 ACCAC) 76-65 Saturday night at the Guiiteau Gymnasium.

The Matadors earned their third straight win by outpacing the Gila Monsters on both ends of the floor.

All twelve Matadors that entered contributed something on both ends of the floor, with 11 of them registering at least one field goal.

Eastern Arizona built an early lead in the first quarter before the pace of the game turned the tide.

Danja Stafford's 18 points led all scorers and spurred the Eastern offense but that was the only major offensive factor for EAC.

The Matadors countered by putting up 82 shots including 47 from three. Faith Silva led the way offensively for Arizona Western with 15 points, 9 of which came on a trio of three's.

Eight other Matadors hit a single three-pointer while Silva and Buse Utku combined to go 11 of 14 at the free-throw line. The Matadors were 17 of 22 at the stripe. However, Eastern was at the charity line more often than AWC, making just 21 of their 35 attempts.

The final part of the equation for Arizona Western came on the defensive end where the Matadors forced 28 turnovers from Eastern that lead to 28 points. As a result, the Gila Monsters took just 57 shots and found the Matadors to be the aggressors through the final three quarters.

Arizona Western held the scoring edge with 20 point quarters in the second and third to tie the game heading into the fourth. The Matadors took advantage of the raucous pace by closing out the ball game 21-10 in the fourth to seal the road victory in their final road contest of the season.

Silva led the way for Arizona Western with 15 points while Utku and Harria Mendoza each had 12. The other seven scoring Matadors each sprinkled in a few points to combine for the other 47 points.

The Lady Matadors will be back in Yuma on Tuesday to conclude the 2019-2020 season on Sophomore Night at The House against Scottsdale Community College beginning at 5:30pm.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
