Matadors' defense smothers Cardinals in 65-29 win

YUMA, AZ - The Arizona Western Matadors (7-1) held North Idaho (2-2) to 29 points in a 65-29 win over the Cardinals on Friday evening at the House. 

The Matadors' defense played its best half of the season in the first half, allowing only two points in the second quarter, leading 37-11 at the break. 

Alliance Ndiba got the Matadors offense going early, scoring eight points in the first quarter as the Mats outscored the Cardinals 21-9 in the first. Ndiba finished the game with 10 points and eight rebounds in just 18 minutes. 

North Idaho went 1-for-11 from the field in the second half as the Matadors pushed their lead to 26 at the half. 

The Matadors hit their only two made three-pointers of the game in the second half, as both Faith Silva and Buse Utke hit threes to push the lead out early in the third. Silva finished as the team's second leading scorer, scoring 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

Kristol Ayson followed up a career-night on Tuesday with a 16 point performance, finishing as the game's leading scorer. 

With the win, the Matadors won their seventh game in eight tries, the team's best start to a season through the first eight games since 2013-14. 

The Matadors finish off the weekend Saturday, hosting Snow College at 5:30 pm at the House.
