    YUMA, Ariz. – A stifling defense powered the Arizona Western College on Friday night at the Desert Classic in Yuma. AWC (3-2 overall) held Illinois Central (4-2 overall) to 34% shooting in a 62-56 win. Arizona Western never trailed, but a crazy final 90 seconds made it close.

    YUMA, Ariz. – A fast, furious start powered the Arizona Western women’s basketball team to a huge early lead, and the Lady Mats controlled the rest of the game to open the 2017-18 season with a win. The Lady Mats cruised past Tohono O’odham 85-40 to record the 400th win in program history.

    YUMA, Ariz. – The journey continues for Stephanie Schmid. An outstanding guard for the Arizona Western women’s basketball team for two seasons and a knockdown shooter while at the University of Nevada for two more, Schmid signed her first professional contract earlier this week.

    YUMA, Ariz. – Positionless, multifaceted players are headlining the current evolution of basketball. Mathilde Diop, nominally a guard, filled a variety of roles this season for the Arizona Western College women’s basketball team.

    DOUGLAS, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College women’s basketball team ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night in the Region I Final at Cochise College. Cochise had the best defense in the conference, and it showed.
