THATCHER, Ariz--The long road trip started with long odds as the Arizona Western Lady Matadors picked up a five set road win over the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters Tuesday night at Thatcher High School.
The Matadors (5-6) opened an eight game road trip by dropping the first set 25-12 to the Gila Monsters (8-7). The Lady Mats responded, however, pulling out wins in sets two and three 25-20 and 25-23.
Eastern was able to force a fifth set with a narrow 25-23 margin in the fourth.
The Matadors earned the early lead in the deciding set and held a 13-11 lead before an Eastern timeout. Lauolive Tonga's huge block setup the set point leading to the Mats closing out the match.
Tonga led the way for AWC with errorless kills and three blocks. Melissa Garciglia Banuelos added 13 kills and Jovana Papaz added 10 as the Matadors hit .229 for the Match.
Arizona Western continues the road swing with two matchs on Thursday in Henderson, NV. The Mats open the three day tournament at 5:00pm against Central Wyoming and finish the evening at 7:00pm against the College of Southern Nevada.
