Meet the Matadors: Joyce Crosby
By Sofia Puga
Sometimes our future paths are paved without our own knowledge. Such is the case of Arizona Western volleyball player and team captain Joyce Crosby.
"I wasn't really planning on playing volleyball, and then my brother sent out emails for me and I didn't know," Crosby said. "Coaches hit me up and we just kept talking."
Originally from Utah, Joyce says in talking to coaches, it was the culture and atmosphere set by Arizona Western's coaches that ultimatley swayed her decision to commit to the Lady Matadors.
"I chose Arizona Western because I really like the coaches," Crosby said. "They're really persistent and honest."
Joyce, who goes by the nickname "JoJo", plays middle for the Arizona Western Volleyball team. Positioned right by the net, she is the first line of defense to stop attacks.
"My job is to block," Crosby said. "So I'm just front row the whole time."
Crosby just completed her collegiate sophomore season and shares how she has grown during her time on campus and some of the early struggles she overcame.
"My freshman year, it was hectic. I just couldn't keep up," Crosby said. "I didn't know how to talk to coaches. So that was hard."
Over time, communication has become easier for Joyce, leading to her being named team captain this past season.
"I feel like I've learned how to express myself more because I used to be really quiet," Crosby said.
Crosby has a few different pre-game rituals before stepping on the court.
"I like to call my family before a game, drink a chocolate milk, and chew some gum," Crosby said.
Majoring in Business Administration and Cybersecurity, Crosby plans to work for the CIA. Her uncle works in the agency, which is where the inspiration came from.
If there was another sport she could play, it would be rugby, and for a simple reason.
"I like to hit people," Crosby joked.
Joyce comes from a big family, and is one of seven siblings. Her polynesian background is why she also does cultural dancing. Her favorite dessert is a chocolate chip cookie, and likes to listen to all kinds of music.
The Lady Matadors Volleyball team is in the offseason. They are preparing for the fall 2026 season and aiming for a spot back in the playoffs.
