Meet the Matadors: Shayden Aguigui
By Sofia Puga
Volleyball is a big part of Shayden Aguigui's life. She watched her sister play the sport while growing up in Hawaii and eventually followed in her sister's footsteps.
"I feel like for me volleyball was just that thing that helped me get away from everything," Aguigui said. "It was something that I really enjoyed."
Shayden or "Shay" is a libero, a position that is primarily in the back row on the volleyball court and notably serves as a defensive player.
"My job is to usually pass, cover, serve and receive," Aguigui said. "Just make sure that the ball doesn't hit that floor."
After constant communication through the recruitment process, Aguigui committed to Arizona Western during her senior year of high school.
"I chose Arizona Western College because of the community here and how safe it was," Aguigui said. "I just really love the work ethic and everything with the coaches and the team so I figured this would be a great fit for me to grow, not only as an athlete but as a person as well."
Being from Hawaii, Aguigui mentions the start differences but also says the Yuma community has some similarities that mirror those she has back home on the island.
"Dry, hot, No beaches," Aguigui joked. "But it is kind of the same, small community. Everyone knows each other, you always meet new people, and then they become close."
The freshman volleyball player is closing in on completing her first year on campus and shares how she's developed since arriving on campus so far away from home.
"I feel good, I know how to manage a lot," Aguigui said. "I feel like my time management has gotten better, and I've learned to take care of myself and let myself hang out with people. You don't want to burn yourself out, especially as a freshman."
Shayden is an active presence on campus, taking photos at almost every sporting event for the athletics department and serves as the public address announcement voice at baseball and some softball games.
Outside of work and colleges activities, Aguigui likes to sleep or hang out with friends. Her favorite food is pasta, and she loves country and worship music. Shayden also uses coloring books to decompress from stressful situations.
"I have a bunch of coloring books," Aguigui said. "My hobbies also include arts and crafts."
Shayden is a psychology and sociology major, with plans to focus on forensic and clinical psych. She is currently mulling over the idea of adding a minor in sports media.
Shayden and the Lady Matadors Volleyball team are currently in the offseason, preparing for the fall season with a focus on getting back into the playoffs.
