Arizona Western delivers a statement win to open NJCAA national tournament
ENID, Okla. - Arizona Western College stormed to a commanding 6-0 victory over Trinity Valley Community College in Pool C of the 2025 NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon. With the win at the national stage, the Lady Matadors improved to 15-1 and showcased dominating form by outshooting their opponent 24-3, including a five-goal offensive eruption in the second half.
After a scoreless opening forty minutes, Momo Chogyogi broke through for Arizona Western in the 41st minute, finishing a pass from Kanon Ozaki to give the Matadors a 1-0 halftime lead. The offense exploded after the break—Ga-eon Ryu doubled the advantage just after the hour mark. Less than 10 minutes later, substitute Reina Kasano set up Asa Yamazaki for a third, before Ozaki and Kei Yoneda scored in quick succession—pushing the lead to 5-0 by the 76th minute. Kasano added the final goal in the 79th, assisted by Karen Sodeyama, capping an emphatic second-half performance that featured five different goal scorers.
Kanon Ozaki starred with a goal and an assist on five shots, while Reina Kasano delivered a late goal and one assist from the bench. Momo Chogyogi, Ga-eon Ryu, Asa Yamazaki and Kei Yoneda each found the back of the net, highlighting the depth and attacking variety of the Matadors. Defensively, goalkeeper Iyan Hernandez made three crucial saves in the first half and anchored the back line to secure the team's 15th shutout in 16 matches.
Arizona Western set the tone with relentless pressure, holding Trinity Valley to three total shots and never allowing a serious threat on goal. The Matadors' depth was on display as substitutes directly contributed to goals and assists, helping the squad tally five goals in the final 30 minutes. The defensive wall held strong throughout, with only one yellow card issued to Kei Yoneda in the 66th minute as the Matadors stayed disciplined in a high-stakes tournament setting.
