Five different players score in Arizona Western's playoff win over Mohave College

YUMA, Ariz. - The #2 ranked Arizona Western women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 win over Mohave College on Wednesday night at Matador Field in the Region 1 semi-final. The showdown marked the third game in a row the two ACCAC rivals squared off against each other. The two programs faced each other twice in the final week of the regular season before meeting again to start the postseason. The Lady Matadors broke into the scoring column first in the 7th minute on a goal by Momo Chogyogi, assisted by Reina Kasano. That would turn out to be the game winner as Region 1 Goalkeeper of the year, Iyan Hernandez turned in another clean sheet for Arizona Western. Kanon Ozaki scored the Lady Matadors second goal of the game in the 28th minute, sophomore captain Kei Yoneda added a penalty kick goal in the 41st minute as Arizona Western took a 3-0 lead into the half. Reika Yuba made the score 4-0 in the 62nd minute with the helper awarded to Kiana Knudson. Soon after, regular season goals and points leader Reina Kasano made the score 5-0 with the assist going to Asa Yamazaki.

"This is the point of the season where we need different players to step up and again, different players stepped up," Arizona Western head coach Victor Verdugo said. "It was a good result going forward, a lot of confidence in a must win situation. As we gained control of the match, we did some changes and gave the players a little more experience and you saw the level never dropped, the girls knew what was at stake and our job is to get 90-minute fit to be able to play going forward."

The Lady Matadors will next host Cochise College on Saturday evening. The Apaches upset #12 ranked Eastern Arizona in penalty kicks on Wednesday night.

Tickets are $7.00 for children and seniors and $10.00 for adults.
