Hernandez named Region 1 women's soccer Goalkeeper of the Year
Arizona Western women's soccer sophomore Iyan Hernandez is this year's Region 1 Goalkeeper of the Year. After posting impressive numbers in her freshman season which included 0.36 GAA (goals allowed average) and a .891 save percentage, Iyan has surpassed those numbers in her sophomore season. Through the regular season, the Matadors are 13-0, Hernandez is 12-0 with nine shutouts along with 0.27 GAA and .889 save percentage.
"For us we were very fortunate to have Iyan, a player with a lot of experience, she played in a top academy before coming to us," Arizona Western women's soccer head coach Victor Verdugo said. "Last year she had the opportunity to step in and start all the games. Came back and had a great spring. Came into the fall as our top goalkeeper and played a big part in all our shutouts. We feel we have the best goalkeepers in the country, and we are we are very fortunate that Iyan is leading us into another regional playoff this year."
The Lady Matadors begin the playoffs this Wednesday, October 29th, as they host Mohave College in the Region 1 Semi-Finals. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. at Matador Field. Tickets are $7.00 for children and seniors and $10.00 for adults.
