Lady Matadors cook at home, extend win streak to 11 games

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western women's soccer team was held scoreless for the first 30 minutes of their match against conference rival Southern Nevada before exploding for seven goals in a 7-0 win on Saturday night at Matador Field. Freshman Reina Kasano opened the scoring with her seventh goal of the season at the 31-minute mark, assisted by Linka Ono. Kasano notched her second goal of the night two minutes later to give Arizona Western a 2-0 lead followed by Reika Yuba's second goal of the season in the 40th minute to give Arizona Western a 3-0 lead into the half.

"For us it was a game where we gave different rotations," Arizona Western head coach Victor Verdugo said. "At the end of the day, the group came together and got us a good final result. We were trying a couple different things to give some players some experience, and we had to make a couple adjustments and the last 45 minutes was pretty exciting to watch."

The Lady Matadors scored four goals in those final 45 minutes starting with Ga-eon Ryu's first goal of the season in the 46th minute, Kanon Ozaki added her team leading 10th goal of the season in the 75th minute followed by foals from Ariana Peraza and Asa Yamazaki. The Lady Matadors finished with six different players scoring a goal. Reina Kasano led the charge with two goals and an assist. Captain Linka Ono tallied three assists in the victory. Sophomore Tindra Biedermann make her first start as goalkeeper and helped lead the way in the team's clean sheet.

"The most exciting thing, our whole front was freshman," Verdugo said. "So, they are gaining that experience and gaining that confidence. We're almost into that time of year where we need freshman playing like veterans and they stepped up. It's exciting to see that chemistry off the field coming onto the field."

The #2 nationally ranked Lady Matadors next will hit the road for a match versus Mohave College on Tuesday before hosting Mohave College in the season and home finale on Friday, October 24th, which will also be sophomore night. Match times are set for 4:30 p.m.
