Doumbia's 32-point double-double powers Lady Matadors past Cochise College 70-57
DOUGLAS, Ariz. – The Arizona Western women's basketball team (17-9, 10-2) secured a commanding 70-57 conference road victory over Cochise College (8-19, 4-8) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Mable Doumbia was named ACCAC player of the week for the second consecutive week and backed that up with another dominant performance, leading all scorers with 32 points and recording a double-double with 11 rebounds. She shot an efficient 14-for-24 from the field to pace the Matadors' offense.
The Matadors established control from the opening tip, jumping out to a 21-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Arizona Western's defense held Cochise to just 20 percent shooting in the period, setting the tone for the entire contest. The Matadors maintained their advantage through the second quarter, taking a 36-25 lead into halftime.
Arizona Western extended its lead in the third quarter, outscoring Cochise 17-12 to build a 53-37 advantage heading into the final frame. Despite a late push from Cochise in the fourth quarter, the Matadors' lead proved insurmountable as they cruised to the victory.
The Matadors showcased excellent ball movement with 26 assists on 31 made field goals, led by six from Jessica Liena. Chen Pan scored 16 points and Garance Soulas added 11, with both dishing out four assists. Kimora Jenkins recorded a team-high three steals in a game where all 70 of the team's points were scored by the starters.
