Doumbia's 38 points fuel massive fourth-quarter comeback in 75-60 win over Central Arizona
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors women's basketball team (16-9, 9-2) used a dominant fourth quarter to storm back and defeat rival Central Arizona College 75-60 in a conference showdown on Saturday night at the House Gymnasium.
Mable Doumbia delivered a monumental performance, leading all scorers with 38 points on 17-for-25 shooting from the field. She recorded a double-double by pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds and tied for the game-high with six steals.
The Matadors started slowly, falling into a 10-point hole as Central Arizona took a 17-7 lead after the first quarter. Arizona Western's defense ignited a comeback in the second, outscoring the Vaqueras 21-8 in the frame. The Matadors took a 28-25 lead into the locker room at halftime after Garance Soulas hit two free throws and Marta Vieira came up with a steal to end the half.
Central Arizona responded after the break, reclaiming the advantage and carrying a 52-48 lead into the final period. The fourth quarter belonged entirely to the Matadors, who overwhelmed the Vaqueras with a 27-8 run. A jumper from Jessica Liena tied the game at 54-54 before a three-pointer by Kimora Jenkins gave Arizona Western the lead for good. Doumbia sealed the victory with back-to-back jumpers in the final two minutes to extend the lead to 13 points.
The Matadors' defensive pressure was a key factor, forcing 26 turnovers which led to 27 points. Liena was a defensive force, matching Doumbia with six steals while adding six points and six rebounds. Jenkins finished with 12 points, and Chen Pan distributed a team-high four assists.
