Doumbia shines but Lady Matadors fall to nation's top team
THATCHER, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College women's basketball team (15-9, 8-2) dropped a hard-fought 66-54 road contest to #1 Eastern Arizona College on Wednesday night at Guitteau Gymnasium. Despite another double-double effort from Mable Doumbia, the Matadors could not overcome second-half turnovers and rebounding difficulties against the Gila Monsters.
Doumbia delivered one of the season's most impressive individual performances, tallying 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks while shooting 10-for-18 from the floor. The double-double marked a high point for the Matadors' campaign, highlighting Doumbia's impact on both ends of the court.
Arizona Western came out strong in the first quarter, with Doumbia's early free throws helping the Matadors to their largest lead of the night at 16-9. The team-maintained momentum into the second quarter and took a slim 26-25 advantage into halftime, capitalizing on efficient shooting and strong interior play.
The third quarter proved pivotal, as Eastern Arizona went on a decisive run to close the frame and swing the game's momentum. A late jumper from the Gila Monsters extended their lead to 10 points entering the fourth. Despite efforts from the Matadors to cut the deficit—highlighted by timely baskets from Kimora Jenkins—Eastern Arizona responded with clutch plays, including a three-pointer to restore a double-digit lead midway through the final quarter.
Kimora Jenkins contributed 16 points, connecting on four shots from beyond the arc and collecting eight rebounds in 37 minutes of action. Garance Soulas added five points, four rebounds and three assists, providing support on both ends of the floor.
The Matadors outshot Eastern Arizona from the field, finishing at nearly 47 percent, but 20 turnovers and a 37-27 deficit on the boards allowed the Gila Monsters to generate more opportunities. Arizona Western dominated scoring in the paint 32-24, but Eastern Arizona's bench depth and rebounding made the difference down the stretch.
