Lady Matadors clamp down defensively, roll past Cochise College 67-56

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College Matadors women's basketball team (13-8, 6-1) delivered a dominant defensive display in a 67-56 conference victory over Cochise College on Friday afternoon at The House. The Matadors forced 30 turnovers, recorded 17 steals and scored 36 points off turnovers, powering their way to a convincing win at home.

Marta Vieira led the Matadors with 13 points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers and adding three steals in 31 minutes. Mable Doumbia filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals on 5-of-9 shooting, while Chen Pan orchestrated the offense with 12 points, five assists and three steals on 5-of-8 from the field.

Arizona Western set the tone early, closing the first quarter with an 8-point lead after Garance Soulas buried a three-pointer at the buzzer off an assist from Aline Mastelic. The Matadors' defensive wall stifled Cochise in the opening period, holding the Apaches to just eight points. In the second quarter, Arizona Western continued to increase the margin, using relentless pressure to force turnovers and ignite fast breaks. Mable Doumbia capped a critical first-half run with a jumper that pushed the lead to 15. By halftime, the Matadors were in full control with a 37-25 advantage.

The third quarter saw the Matadors put the game out of reach, outscoring Cochise 23-15. Kimora Jenkins fueled the surge with a timely jumper to extend the lead to 20, while Garance Soulas later hit a jumper for the team's largest lead at 62-40. Arizona Western's defensive intensity never let up, and even with offensive production dipping in the final period, the Matadors' cushion held firm as they finished off the Apaches for the double-digit win.

Kimora Jenkins added 11 points and hit three triples, providing a spark from beyond the arc. Garance Soulas contributed key baskets and defensive stops. As a team, Arizona Western dished out 21 assists on 26 made field goals and connected on eight three-pointers while holding Cochise to just four.
