Pregame Preview: Lady Matadors face tough test against #2 ranked team in the country

YUMA, Ariz. - Arizona Western women's basketball team puts its six-game win streak on the line versus the #2 ranked team in the nation. Eastern Arizona College will arrive at "The House" this afternoon on a 17-game win streak. Both teams are undefeated in ACCAC play; one win streak will come to an end this afternoon. Arizona Western is also featuring it's Play4Kay campaign, honoring local cancer survivors and raising money for life saving cancer research, underserved programs that provide access to quality cancer healthcare, and unite people in the fight against all cancers affecting women.

About the Lady Matadors

At one point this season, Arizona Western was 5-7, now the Lady Matadors are surging, winning six straight, including a 94-33 dismantling of Yavapai College. Recent series results suggest a defensive formula that works against Eastern Arizona, with the Matadors holding the Gila Monsters to 61, 50 and 40 points in three victories last season. A guard-driven attack leads the way, and rebounding focus will be critical.

• #22 Mable Doumbia (G) — 13.9 PPG; scored 19 in last season's 51-50 win over EAC. • #1 Chen Pan (G) — 12.7 PPG; a steady perimeter threat alongside Doumbia. • #5 Kimora Jenkins (G) — 9.2 PPG; reliable third scoring option. • #3 Garance Soulas (G) — 8.6 PPG; deepens AWC's guard-heavy rotation.

About Eastern Arizona

Eastern Arizona enters as one of the nation's hottest teams at 17-1 with a 17-game winning streak and sits at #2 in the NJCAA DI rankings. The Gila Monsters feature balanced scoring and strong rebounding; key traits they'll lean on to flip the recent head-to-head narrative and avenge three close losses to the Matadors.

• #0 Esmeralda Enriquez (G) — Team-high 14.6 PPG; primary offensive engine. • #4 Eanae Dagons (G) — 8.8 PPG; pulled down 11 rebounds vs AWC in one meeting last season. • #22 Stephany Goncalves (G) — 6.5 PPG; led EAC with 15 points in last year's 54-40 loss to AWC. • #11 Lucia Auza (G) — Impact rebounder off the bench; 11 boards and 9 points in the one-point loss to AWC. • #24 Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam (G) — 8.1 PPG; floor spacer in EAC's balanced attack. • Scoring depth: five players averaging 6.5+ PPG.

Series and Stakes

Eastern Arizona leads the all-time series 14-11, but Arizona Western has captured the last three meetings, including a 65-61 OT win at Eastern Arizona, and a 51-50 nailbiter. With EAC surging and AWC resurgent, this matchup carries significant ACCAC implications: redemption opportunity for the Gila Monsters and a statement chance for the Matadors to prove they deserved their #17 preseason ranking. Arizona Western swept the three games a year ago, Eastern won all four games versus Arizona Western in the 2023-24 season. Today's game can be seen live on the Matadors Sports Stream.
