Lady Matadors hold off Salt Lake Community College in defensive thriller

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Arizona Western College Matadors women's basketball team (5-6) delivered a gritty, bounce-back road win with a 58-55 victory over Salt Lake Community College on Saturday afternoon at Bruin Arena. The Matadors led wire-to-wire in the non-conference contest, surviving a late rally from the Bruins with a decisive defensive stand in the closing seconds.

Chen Pan sparked the offense with an efficient 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Kimora Jenkins poured in 17 points, going 4-for-6 from three-point range. Mable Doumbia anchored the defensive effort, finishing with 12 points, a game-high 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.

Arizona Western stormed out of the gates, opening the game with a 9-0 run capped by a Jenkins three-pointer, holding the Bruins scoreless for the opening minutes. The Matadors closed the first quarter with a 21-12 lead, fueled by sharp ball movement and early stops. Salt Lake Community College battled back in the second quarter, tightening the defensive pressure as they trimmed the Matadors' advantage to 30-28 by halftime.

The third quarter proved pivotal as the Matadors clamped down defensively, holding the Bruins to just 6 points and three field goals. Doumbia responded to an early tie with a three-point play, and Jenkins' second three-pointer of the period helped stretch the lead as Arizona Western outscored Salt Lake 20-6 in the frame, building a commanding 50-34 margin heading to the fourth.

Salt Lake Community College mounted a furious rally in the final quarter, led by Lyla Kahrimanovic, who finished with a game-high 22 points. The Bruins drew within three points in the final seconds, but with the game on the line, the Matadors forced a contested three-pointer that missed at the buzzer, preserving the win.

Mable Doumbia led all players in rebounds, steals and blocks, while Kimora Jenkins delivered four three-pointers at a 66.7 percent clip. Chen Pan added five rebounds and one steal in her 37-minute performance.

Up next for Arizona Western, a week off to prepare for the Chapman Automotive Winter Classic at "The House" on the Arizona Western campus starting 15th-19th. The Lady Matadors begin play in the classic on Tuesday, December 15th, at 5:00 p.m. versus Casper College.
