Lady Matadors set the tone early, roll past Trinidad State 73-48

YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College women's basketball team (4-5) ended a three-game losing streak with a dominant defensive showcase and balanced offensive attack on Friday night, defeating Trinidad State College 73-48 in a non-conference matchup at "The House." The Lady Matadors raced out to a 17-0 start, forced 33 turnovers and never trailed as they secured their fourth win of the season.

Mable Doumbia set the tone on both ends, finishing with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, along with a game-high eight steals and two blocks. Doumbia was everywhere defensively and helped ignite the Lady Matadors' fast start, while pacing the offense with efficient 7-of-12 shooting.

Arizona Western wasted no time, blitzing Trinidad State with a 17-0 run to open the game as Garance Soulas knocked down an early three and Kimora Jenkins drilled back-to-back threes for a 20-3 lead. The Matadors set the tone with suffocating defense, forcing 13 turnovers and grabbing 7 steals in the first quarter, building a commanding 24-7 advantage after 10 minutes. Arizona Western continued to control the pace in the second quarter, utilizing interior scoring from Aline Mastelic and Doumbia to extend the margin. At halftime, the Matadors led 40-19, with every starter contributing on both ends.

The defensive pressure never relented after halftime, with Arizona Western forcing more turnovers and converting them into easy transition points. The Matadors outscored Trinidad State in every quarter, pushing the lead to as many as 29 points in the fourth on another run sparked by Doumbia and Jenkins. Arizona Western maintained its double-digit lead throughout, controlling the boards and tempo to close out a complete performance. The team finished with 22 steals, 13 assists and shot 44.8 percent for the game while holding Trinidad State to just 43.6 percent shooting on lower volume.

Aline Mastelic anchored the first half with 12 points and 6 rebounds, while Garance Soulas poured in 14 points, grabbed five rebounds and added three steals. Chen Pan provided an all-around effort with 6 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Kimora Jenkins finished with 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting, knocking down two early threes and adding three steals.
