Hampered by early turnovers and foul trouble, Lady Matadors fourth-quarter push comes up short
ODESSA, Tex. - The Arizona Western Matadors women's basketball team (2-2) dropped a 63-55 decision to Odessa College in a non-conference matchup at the Wrangler Classic in Odessa, Texas, on Friday afternoon. The Matadors were hampered by early turnovers and foul trouble but mounted a resilient fourth-quarter push before ultimately falling short in their second loss of the season.
Chen Pan paced Arizona Western with 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting, adding four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Pan sparked the late comeback attempt with seven points in the fourth quarter, finishing the game shooting 77 percent from the field.
Odessa College set the tone early, jumping out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter as the Matadors struggled to settle in offensively, committing multiple turnovers. Arizona Western responded in the second quarter with improved ball movement and defensive intensity, outscoring Odessa 12-9 to close the gap to 27-20 at halftime. Despite cutting the lead to five late in the third quarter, the Matadors saw Odessa counter with a timely run, building the advantage back to 51-39 going into the final period.
With their backs against the wall, Arizona Western put together a spirited push in the fourth. Kimora Jenkins knocked down a three-pointer and Pan added a put-back to ignite a 6-1 run, narrowing the deficit to seven. Defensive pressure led to several stops, and Pan's layup off a steal made it a 10-point game with under two minutes left. The Matadors closed with a 6-0 run in the final minute, but time expired before they could complete the comeback.
Aline Mastelic and Mable Doumbia each contributed 10 points, with Mastelic grabbing a team-high five rebounds and blocking two shots. Jenkins finished with 10 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Garance Soulas came off the bench for seven points and three rebounds. The Matadors dominated inside with 24 points in the paint and shot 50 percent from three-point range, but were ultimately undone by 29 turnovers and foul trouble that saw two players foul out
Arizona Western will next hit the court next Thursday, November 13th, against Ranger College. The game will be played at Midland College, tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM MST.
