The Stage: Early Morning, Big Moment

No. 18 Arizona Western faces 12-seed Volunteer State this morning at 9:00 a.m. CT at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama, at the 2026 NJCAA DI Softball World Series. It's a quick turnaround, a first-known meeting, and a chance for the Lady Matadors to keep their run alive against a 51-15 Pioneers squad. Game will be broadcast on ESPN +

Drought Broken

Arizona Western's elimination-game win over San Jacinto changed the narrative. After being shut out in three straight NJCAA World Series games—and opening this year with a 3-0 loss to Iowa Western—the Lady Matadors finally broke through, ending both their World Series scoring drought and win drought. It's the program's first World Series victory since May 14, 2014, when AWC beat Spartanburg Methodist 5-1 in the elimination bracket.

Bats Coming Alive

The search for one swing, one inning, one spark ended against San Jacinto—and the goal now is to carry it straight into the sunrise slot. Analy Trejo continues to swing a hot bat, Aaliyah Soderlund is settling into the World Series stage with timely production, and Corinna Talbot stayed hot after recording her first World Series hit in the opener. Add Larissa Rueda's big at-bats in the win, and the lineup looks ready to keep pressure on from pitch one.

Volunteer State Scouting Report

Volunteer State (51-15) arrives as the next obstacle after a tight 5-4 setback to Seminole State (OK). It's the first-known meeting with AWC, made trickier by the quick turnaround and early start. The 12-seed Pioneers feature arms that can keep games tight—Gracyn Nealon (2.53 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) and Mia Harper (2.28 ERA) headline the staff—while the lineup brings production and pop from Maddie Goad (.386, 15 HR, 73 RBI). The path for AWC: bring yesterday's edge, create traffic early, and force the Pioneers into stress pitches.

Players to Watch

Jessica Smith (RHP) — Poise and precision to set the morning tone and control innings.

Analy Trejo — Middle-of-the-order force; keeps lifting the offense.

Aaliyah Soderlund — Timely production as she settles into the World Series stage.

Corinna Talbot — Rolling after her first World Series hit in the opener.

Larissa Rueda — Woke up with big swings vs. San Jacinto; key bat to extend rallies.

Keys to the Game

• Carry the momentum: Build off the San Jacinto win and avoid a slow start.

• Keep the bats loose: Continued production from Trejo, Soderlund, Talbot, and Rueda.

• Handle the quick turnaround: Reset fast after an emotional elimination win.

• Stay aggressive: Keep pressure on Volunteer State with traffic and tempo.
