Lady Matadors roll to home doubleheader sweep of Yavapai behind dominant pitching

YUMA, Ariz. -- The Arizona Western College softball team (24-11, 8-6) returned home and powered past Yavapai College with a doubleheader sweep, winning 6-0 and 7-1 on Friday afternoon at Charlie Dine Field in a ACCAC conference matchup to extend their home record to 15-2 and push their winning streak to five games.

Jessica Smith delivered a signature performance in game one, firing a complete-game shutout with 12 strikeouts and only four hits allowed. In game two, Brooklyn Cann went the distance as well, holding Yavapai to just one run on five hits over seven innings.

GAME ONE

Game one featured a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, with Smith racking up strikeouts to keep Yavapai off balance. The Matadors broke through in the fifth, exploding for six runs and putting the contest out of reach. Corinna Talbot sparked the lineup, finishing 3-for-3 with a run and a stolen base. Analy Trejo started her strong day with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring once and driving in a run.

Arizona Western's aggressive approach on the bases paid off with four steals in game two, while the defense played flawlessly behind Smith with zero errors. The Matadors left no runners stranded in either contest, capitalizing on every scoring opportunity and maximizing offensive production.

GAME TWO

Arizona Western set the tone early, pushing across two runs in the second and third innings before erupting for three more in the fourth to build a commanding 7-0 lead. Corinna Talbot led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Rauni Gallegos drove in two runs with a double. Gabby Weisser and Analy Trejo also delivered multi-hit games, each adding a double as the Matadors collected 11 hits, including five for extra bases. Cann worked efficiently in the circle, making just one mistake in the sixth when Yavapai plated its only run.

With the sweep, Arizona Western improved to 24-11 overall and 8-6 in ACCAC play, earning their sixth shutout of the year and remaining perfect in games where they hold opponents scoreless. Yavapai was limited to just one run over 14 innings, as Matador pitching and timely hitting again proved decisive in pivotal conference play.
