Lady Matadors leave Texas with two wins in five games

ODESSA, Tex. - Bats stymied for both teams on Saturday afternoon as Arizona Western (18-7, 2-2) falls to Odessa College 3-0. 

Both teams were strong in the circle on Saturday, but Odessa College was just a little bit stronger at the plate in their 3-0 victory over the Lady Matadors. 

Odessa College got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning after Riley Cassidy walked, and Alyssa Smith singled to the left side of the infield. 

Brooklyn Cann stepped in the circle first for Arizona Western and allowed just four hits and three runs over six innings, striking out four and walking two. Jayda Lorigan got the start for Odessa and surrendered one hit and no runs over six innings, striking out six and walking one.

Rauni Gallegos led Arizona Western with a hit in four at bats. 

For Odessa College, Meret Willeke went 1-for-3 and drove in a run. Alyssa Smith, Aysia Suyat, Willeke, and Angelique Iredale each collected one hit for Odessa College. Suyat stole two bases. 

Arizona Western finished its five-game road trip in Texas winning two games. The Lady Matadors were swept by Midland College on Thursday then won both games against Howard College on Friday before falling to Odessa College. 

FRIDAY - GAME ONE 

Nevaeh Tapia drove in four runs on two hits to lead Arizona Western past the Howard Hawks 10-6 on Friday. Tapia singled in the first inning, driving in scoring two runs, then hit a home run in the fifth inning to drive in two more. The Lady Matadors jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Larissa Rueda doubled, bringing in the game's first run, followed by Tapia's two run single. 

Arizona Western added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning with two runs scoring on Tapia's homerun.

Autumn Arriola pitched 3.2 innings in relief allowing four runs (two earned) and striking out a batter. 

Arizona Western piled up 15 hits in the game. Larissa Rueda led Lady Matadors finishing a perfect 4-for-4. Rauni Gallegos collected three hits in five at bats. 

FRIDAY - GAME TWO

Analy Trejo drove in four runs on three hits to lead Arizona Western past Howard College 10-2 on Friday. Trejo hit a home run to center field in the fourth inning, plating three of her four RBI on the day.

The Lady Matadors added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning on three hits. Autumn Arriola singled and scored. Rauni Gallegos added a two run homerun.

Brooklyn Cann began the game for Arizona Western and surrendered two hits and two runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking five.

Arizona Western amassed 11 hits in the game. Larissa Rueda and Gallegos each collected multiple hits for Arizona Western.

Arizona Western continues its 13-game road trip by dipping back into ACCAC play next week. The Lady Matadors travel to Las Vegas to face the College of Southern Nevada for a four-game series next Friday and Saturday, March 13-14.
