Lady Matadors overpowered by Midland College to begin Texas road trip
MIDLAND, Tex. - The Arizona Western softball team dropped both games to Midland College on Thursday afternoon, 11-3 & 12-5, to being a five-game road trip in the state of Texas.
GAME 1
Arizona Western opened the scoring in the second inning on a Riley Purdy single that drove home the game's first run.
Midland College Softball quickly regained the lead in the home half of the second inning when Mia Garcia drew a walk, scoring one run, and Brianna Flores singled, scoring two more, propelling Midland to a 3-1 lead.
Arizona Western College Matadors tied the game in the top of the third thanks to a solo home run to left field by Autumn Arriola, and a double by Myah Alexander.
Midland College once again answered in the home half of the inning. Jozanna Montes homered to center field, scoring two runs, to give Midland College Softball the advantage, 5-3.
Midland tallied two more runs in the fifth inning and never looked back, taking game one 11-3.
Marie Rondeau earned the win for Midland College, scattering seven hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out four and walking five. Jessica Smith took the loss for Arizona Western, tossing only three innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out three and walking four.
Myah Alexander, Autumn Arriola, and Riley Purdy each drove in one run for the Lady Matadors. Lea Frechette went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Arizona Western College in hits.
GAME 2
Once again it was Arizona Western getting on the board first as Analy Trejo hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning.
An error gave Midland College Softball the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the second. Midland extended their early lead with four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to home runs by Adelina Noriega and Mia Rodriguez.
Autumn Arriola started in the circle for Arizona Western and surrendered four hits and six runs (two earned) over three innings, striking out three and walking four in thre Lady Matadors 12-5 defeat.
Analy Trejo finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Arizona Western.
