Lady Matadors extend win streak to 10 in a row
YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors softball team (12-2) recorded a pair of shutout victories on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Softball Field, beating Luna Community College 8-0 in five innings before blanking Utah State Eastern 4-0. Arizona Western now has a 10 game win streak.
In the opener, the Matadors' offense was led by Léa Fréchette who drove in three runs and hit a two-run homer. Analy Trejo earned the win, throwing four shutout innings with three strikeouts while also hitting a solo home run.
Arizona Western jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI from Fréchette and Trejo's home run. The Matadors broke the game open with four runs in the third. Rauni Gallegos started the rally by stealing home before an Avery Rodriguez two-run double extended the lead to 5-0. Alana McDonnell capped the inning with an RBI single. Fréchette ended the game in the fourth with a two-run shot, securing the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Jessica Smith was dominant in the circle in game two, tossing a complete-game, two-hit shutout while striking out seven batters to lead the Matadors to the win. Trejo continued her impressive day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI triple.
The Matadors again scored early, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Fréchette and Trejo's run-scoring triple. Gabby Weisser pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly. An insurance run was added in the sixth when Aaliyah Soderlund scored on a wild pitch, finalizing the 4-0 win.

The Matadors are back at Charlie Dine Softball Field on Sunday, Feb. 15, to face Utah State Eastern in another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. The game will be streamed on the Matador Sports Steam with Scott Gross on the call for both games.
