Matadors stunned in overtime, season ends in penalty kick thriller

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western men's soccer season came to a stunning end on Tuesday night against Yavapai. The Matadors watched a two-goal lead vanish and the Roughriders win in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the Region 1 Final on Saturday Night.

"It may have been a lack of tactical discipline and an unwillingness to manage the game one we had a lead," Arizona Western head coach Kenny Dale said. "It's a good learning lesson for our guys but unfortunately we have to wait until August to take advantage of that lesson. So, pretty disappointing end for us. The last 10 days have been a struggle. Today it was the same and you have to prove it every day, and we didn't do that. We have a lot of players that have bright futures so I'm excited about them moving on."

Arizona Western opened the scoring with a goal in the 5th minute by Roussel Laity, his third on the season. The Matadors extended their lead in the 24th minute on a goal by Abdou Moursali (7) assisted by Aiki Sadaoka. Yavapai answered in the 38th minute on a goal by Andres Pulido. Arizona Western took a 2-1 lead into the half. Yavapai evened the score in the 69th minute with an unassisted goal by Cesar da Silva. The score remained tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and after two 10-minute overtime periods, before Yavapai emerged victorious in the penalty kick shootout, 5-4 after seven rounds.
