Matadors claim ACCAC regular season championship
PRESCOTT, Ariz. - For the first time under head coach Kyle Isaacs, the Arizona Western College men's basketball team claimed the ACCAC regular season title all for themselves. The Matadors (22-7, 12-2 ACCAC) delivered a statement performance on the road Wednesday night, overwhelming Yavapai College 103-80.
The Matadors seized control from the opening tip, asserting themselves behind a relentless offensive pace and sharp execution. Arizona Western quickly built a double-digit lead thanks to efficient shot-making and aggressive rebounding, surging into halftime with a 48-38 advantage. After the break, the Matadors poured it on, outscoring Yavapai 55-42 in the second half and breaking the 100-point barrier late to put the game out of reach. Arizona Western's defense also stepped up with timely steals and forced turnovers, refusing to let the Roughriders mount any sustained rally.
Matt Anglo led a balanced attack, pouring in 23 points on a highly efficient 10-of-15 shooting while adding an assist in 33 minutes. Marsai Mason notched a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the line and collecting two steals. Paora Winitana added 20 points and 7 rebounds, hitting 10 of his 11 field goal attempts and contributing four assists. The frontcourt was boosted by Illiam Fevry, who scored 11 points, grabbed 8 boards, and tallied 2 assists over 37 minutes, while Mario Brunetto chipped in 11 points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting.
Arizona Western's offensive explosion was fueled by 62.1 percent shooting from the field and a dominant effort on the glass, out-rebounding Yavapai 35-25. Five Matadors reached double figures, underscoring the team's depth and commitment to unselfish play. The defense collected six steals and forced Yavapai into tough shots, while the Matadors' ball security was outstanding with only four turnovers compared to 12 assists. The 103-point output stands as one of Arizona Western's most complete performances of the season, with both starters and reserves making key contributions to a crucial conference victory.
With the victory, the Matadors win the ACCAC regular season title outright for the first time under the Kyle Isaacs regime. Arizona Western also clinches the No. 1 seed in ther Region I tournament which means the Matadors won't be on the road again unless they make the national tournament.
