Matadors win sixth straight, hang on down the stretch versus NMMI

ROSWELL, N.M. - Arizona Western (9-2) won their sixth straight game on Friday night with a 101-98 win over New Mexico Military Institute at Cahoon Military Gym in Roswell, New Mexico.

From the opening tip, both teams unleashed an offensive onslaught, trading baskets and runs in a game that featured breakneck pace and little defensive relief. Arizona Western took a 51-45 lead into halftime after establishing an early rhythm, then braced for a furious second-half push from the Broncos. The Matadors relied on their depth and composure, weathering a back-and-forth final period that saw both squads combine for 103 points after the break.

Key to the victory was the Matadors' dominance on the glass, as they outrebounded New Mexico Military Institute 40-26, creating valuable second-chance opportunities in a game where every possession mattered. Arizona Western also shot a scorching 61.7 percent from the field, underscoring their offensive efficiency. The difference ultimately came at the free-throw line, where the Matadors converted 22 of 27 attempts for 81.5 percent, highlighted by perfect execution in the game's closing minutes.

The Matadors hit some key shots in the final minute along with stout defensive stands to preserve a nail-biting win down the stretch. Arizona Western was led by Matt Anglo who led all scorers with 28 points, shooting 8-14 from the field and 10-10 from the free throw line. Anglo was one of three Matadors who finished the night in double figures. Engel Gutierrez ended with 18 points and Illiam Fevry pitched in with 16 off the bench. The Matadors will next face Trinidad State on Saturday in the same gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. MST. The livestream can be seen here: https://www.ksvptv.com/nmmi-junior-college/
