Men's basketball cruises past Gila Monsters 70-61 on Sophomore day

 YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western Matadors' Men's Basketball team (21-6, 14-5) extended its winning streak to six games with a 70-61 win over Eastern Arizona (19-8, 12-7) on Saturday at the House Gymnasium.

Marquis Hargrove led the Matadors with 16 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field with a pair of made three-pointers to help the Matadors extend their lead over Eastern Arizona to two games in the race for the second seed of the Region I playoffs.

The Matadors jumped out to a 22-12 lead midway through the first half before Eastern Arizona used a 0-0 run to cut the Matadors' lead to 22-20. The Matadors closed the half on an 11-3 run to take a 33-23 lead at the break.

Yaxel Lendeborg scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, recording his eighth double-double in the last nine games.

Eastern Arizona cut the Matadors' lead to 35-30 early in the second half before Evan Butts hit a pair of three-pointers as part of a 12-1 run to push the lead to 47-36. The Matadors opened up a 60-42 lead after a breakout layup from AJ Marmolejos late in the half. Eastern used a 9-2 run to get to within nine points but would come no closer.

Butts was the Matadors' third-leading scorer, scoring 14 points, and hitting three, three-pointers in the win while Marmolejos added 10 points off the bench.

The Matadors are hit the road on Wednesday, February 22 when they head to Prescott, Ariz. for a matchup with Yavapai at 5:30 pm.
