Castro hits for cycle, leads Matadors to 10-6 win over CSN

YUMA, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona Western Matadors Baseball team (24-6, 7-5) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 10-6 victory over the No. 18 College of Southern Nevada Coyotes on Saturday afternoon at Walt Kammann Baseball Field.

The Matadors jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the first inning, but the Coyotes answered back immediately, scoring three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-3 advantage. Arizona Western tied the game at four in the bottom of the third inning.

Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning to make it a 5-5 game. The Coyotes briefly regained the lead with a run in the top of the sixth before the Matadors' offense took control, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 7-6.

Arizona Western extended its lead in the seventh inning, plating three more runs to build a 10-6 cushion. The Matadors' pitching staff shut down the Coyotes in the final two innings to secure the win, backed by a strong offensive day that produced 15 hits. Filippo Baldassarri (W, 4-0) pitched four innings in relief to get the win. 

Gerardo Castro led the way by hitting for the cycle and driving in five runs. Castro finished 4 for 5 at the plate. Parker Husu was 3 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and one RBI. Jamie Beerman hit his first collegiate homerun and drove in two runs.

The Matadors are back in action on Tuesday, March 24, hosting Phoenix College at Walt Kammann Baseball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
