Matadors stroke four homeruns in 12-2 win over White Rock
YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western College baseball team (20-3, 4-2) delivered a commanding 12-2 victory over the White Rock Tritons, a traveling team from British Columbia, Canada, in a six-inning contest Wednesday afternoon at Walt Kammann Field, extending their winning streak to a half dozen.
The Matadors wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and setting the tone for a big offensive day. After the Tritons responded with a run in the second, Arizona Western answered quickly with another run of their own to maintain momentum.
Gerardo Castro powered the offense by blasting two home runs (4,5) and collecting five RBI (36) in just three at-bats, leading a relentless attack throughout the afternoon. The Matadors continued to pile on, adding three more runs in the fourth before erupting for four in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Elias Huber added a home run (6) and drove in two runs (32), Luis Angulo also added solo shot (3) while the team tallied 10 hits and stole seven bases.
Joris Meinsma (2-0) turned in a strong start on the mound, working five innings and allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four to earn his second win of the season. The Matadors' pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts and allowed only a single hit over six frames, helping seal a run-rule victory.
