Matadors dominate Eastern Arizona with doubleheader sweep

YUMA, Ariz. - The Arizona Western Baseball team (17-3, 3-2) swept a doubleheader against rival Eastern Arizona College on Friday afternoon at Walt Kammann Field, opening with a 10-0 run-rule victory before securing a 2-0 shutout.

GAME ONE

Diego Alcala set the tone in game one, fanning 11 batters over 4 2/3 shutout innings and holding Eastern Arizona to just two hits. The Matadors wasted no time jumping ahead, as Parker Husu scored on a passed ball in the first before Elias Huber broke the game open in the second with a bases clearing inside the park grand to stretch the lead to 6-0.

Arizona Western's offense capitalized on every opportunity, using only eight hits to plate 10 runs, including a two-run double by Luis Acosta in a four-run fourth inning. Gerardo Castro turned in a 2-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI, while Husu reached base all three times and scored three runs. The contest was called after five innings via run rule, with Arizona Western's aggressive baserunning and clutch two-out hitting setting the pace.

GAME TWO

In the second game, pitching once again took center stage. Thijs Helms delivered 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven to earn the win. Gregorys Mateo closed the door with 2 1/3 hitless frames and three strikeouts to record the save, combining for a two-hit shutout.

Elian Olmos drew a leadoff walk in the third and eventually scored the opening run on an RBI groundout by Ten Shindo. Luis Angulo added insurance in the seventh with a solo home run, providing all the support the Matadors' pitching staff would need.
