YUMA, Ariz. – The Arizona Western College softball team has flown under the radar after a slow start to the season. Not so much anymore. The Lady Mats have won 15 straight and were ranked 20th in the latest NJCAA poll released earlier today.
AWC (24-9 overall, 18-4 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) vaulted into the top 20 thanks to that winning streak which included sweeps of Yavapai College (currently ranked 18th) and Phoenix College (ranked seventh in NJCAA Division II play).
The winning streak vaulted the Lady Mats into second in conference play, and they will be halfway through the conference season after a road doubleheader at sixth-ranked Eastern Arizona College this afternoon.
This is the second week of the regular season polls. AWC hadn’t been ranked yet this year.
Seven players have hit a home run for AWC, with Jessica Alvarez and Isabel Sanchez each hitting four homers. A pair of freshman (Makenna Stram and Koryne Coddington) have combined to pitch 179 innings.
After playing at Eastern Arizona today, the Lady Mats will be home on Saturday afternoon to host Pima Community College. The doubleheader will start at noon, and admission is FREE to the Charlie Dine Softball Field at AWC!
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
