YUMA, Ariz. – A pair of standouts for the Arizona Western softball team were honored earlier this week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Pitcher Belinda Gonzalez and infielder Allison Betty were named to the NFCA All-Region Second Team for the West District.
Gonzalez capped her second straight strong season for the Lady Mats in the circle with a win at Eastern Arizona College on the final day of the season. She earned a spot on the All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Third Team while also being named the ACCAC DI Pitcher of the Week five times this year. Next season she is headed to New Mexico Highlands to continue her education and playing career.
As a freshman, she was named Second Team All-ACCAC along with two DI Pitcher of the Week awards. She was also awarded the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence by the NJCAA.
Betty manned the middle of the infield for the Lady Mats this year and was a force to be reckoned with at the top of the team’s order. She earned All-ACCAC First Team and All-Region I, Division I nods after batting .461 this season with eight home runs. The freshman also was named the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week after the first week of the season.
The Lady Mats wrapped up the season 36-21 and have had all six sophomores sign with four-year universities. Gonzalez and McKenna Pisciotta both signed with New Mexico Highlands, and Sally Gastelo signed with North Texas. Selena Silva, Hailey Cookson and Karly Turner all inked with Ottawa University-Surprise.
