YUMA, Ariz. – Allison Betty and Makenna Stram nabbed All-Conference nominations for the Arizona Western College softball team earlier this week. The two were named to the All-Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Second Team, and Betty was named to the All-Region I, Division I Team as well.
Betty led the Lady Matadors with a .434 batting average and was a constant threat in the lineup. The sophomore closed the season on a tear by hitting four homers and piling up 19 RBI in the final nine games. She led the team with seven homers, 59 RBI, 23 doubles, and 34 extra-base hits. Plus she stole 10 bases while posting a .747 slugging percentage.
Stram was a dependable presence in the circle, and the freshman led the team in appearances (38), wins (21), innings (165.0) and strikeouts (128). She also tied for the team lead with 13 complete games. The left-hander posted a 2.42 ERA, and her 21 wins were fifth in the conference. On top of pitching, Stram led off all year and had a team-high 209 at bats. She hit .373 with a .413 on-base percentage, and her eight triples were best on the team. Stram led the team with 58 runs scored and stole 18 bases without being caught.
The Lady Mats (40-19 overall) wrapped up the season as the third seed for the Region I, Division I Playoffs. The team will take on Eastern Arizona in the first playoff on Friday, May 4 at 9:00 a.m. The tournament is a double-elimination tournament, and it is at top-seeded Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
