Mats take down Imperial Valley College

YUMA, Ariz--- The #7 Arizona Western College Matadors (15-0 overall, 7-0 ACCAC) earned their 15th win of the season on Thursday night with a 5-0 match against Imperial Valley College (1-11-1 overall, 0-4-1 CCCAA).
Although it was a non-conference game, the victory improved the team’s overall score for the season and took the program to 15-0 for the first time in its history.
The game remained scoreless until the second half when Nozomu Kamei struck first in the 48th minute to make his 11th goal of the season, with an assist by Haruki Nishimura.
Then Erik Vera extended the lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute for his first goal of the season off a corner kick made by Romaric Berneron.
The flood gates opened after that with Nishimura putting the ball into the back of the net in the 64th minute and then Ernie Garza with another goal about a minute later to bring the score 4-0.
With just six minutes left in the game, Hirotaka Sugishita made the last goal of the match with an assist by Leonardo Pitocchi for a final score of 5-0, bringing the Matadors to 81 goals for the season.
AWC had 17 shots on goal and one goalie save. Imperial Valley had one shot on goal and 5 goalie saves.
The Mats will look to continue their winning streak as they take on the Paradise Valley Pumas at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Matador Soccer Field.
