PHOENIX, Ariz--Despite giving up the first basket of the game seconds in, the rest of the contest went as smooth as could be for the Arizona Western Matadors (16-10 overall, 10-8 ACCAC) in a 83-50 route of South Mountain Community College (9-17 overall, 5-13 ACCAC) Wednesday night.
Daniel Kiely and Gio Nelson helped the Matadors jump ahead on a 14-2 run after that opening basket and the Matadors never let off the gas.
Kiely led the way with a 9-15 night from the field and 24 points but everyone had a contribution for AWC.
Four other Matadors scored in double figures with James Dunlop finishing with an 11 point, 11 rebound double-double. Dunlop also added three blocks
The Matadors ball movement was among the best they've had all season as they registered 17 assists on 29 made baskets. Jordan Green led with 7 assists.
Another area the Matadors showed marked improvement was at the line where they shot 21-23 on free-throws (91.3%).
With the win, Arizona Western gains a game on Eastern Arizona and Mesa who are both ahead of them in the Region I, Division I Standings. The Mats also gained a game on Central Arizona for a two game cushion.
Arizona Western returns to Yuma on Saturday to take on Phoenix College. Women begin at 5:30pm, Men follow at 7:30pm.
