Dropping Shots

YUMA, Ariz. – Two games, two wins for the Arizona Western College men’s basketball team last week. Matador guard Dajuan Beard shot 69% from the floor, and the sophomore was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Week.

Beard scored in double figures in both games and saved one of his best games of the season in the team’s 93-90 win at then ninth-ranked Phoenix College. Beard scored 22 of his team-best 26 points after halftime, and he hit big three’s down the stretch to help erase a 10-point hole with less than 6:30 to play.

Last Wednesday, Beard set a personal best with 13 assists in a 120-75 win over Tohono O’odham, and he added 19 points. He hit 7-12 of his three-point attempts.

Beard is averaging 12.4 points per game this season, and he has scored at least 10 in his last four games and 15 times total this year. He set a career high with 32 points in a win over Glendale on January 10. Beard is shooting 44.9% from three (fourth best in the league), and he averages 3.5 rebounds and three assists per game as well.

AWC has had a player named Player of the Week five times this year. Alfonso Plummer has earned the honor twice, and Brandon McGhee and Ezekiel Alley have both earned the award once.

The Mats (17-8 overall, 12-5 ACCAC) are currently tied with Cochise in the conference standings with five games left to play. Wednesday night, the Mats host Central Arizona College at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
