Butts big night helps Mats to 71-66 win over North Idaho

YUMA, AZ - The Arizona Western Matadors (8-2) won their fifth consecutive game, beating North Idaho (1-2) 71-66 on Friday night at The House.

Freshman guard Evan Butts scored a season-high 22 points, hitting six three pointers to help the Matadors stay perfect at home this season. Butts hit four of his six threes in the first half, scoring 16 points in the first 20 minutes to help the Matadors take a 44-36 lead into the locker room at the half. 

The Matadors went 9-of-16 from the three-point line in the first half.

Arizona Western pushed the lead out to a game-high nine points early in the second half, but North Idaho would chip away, pulling to within one point late in the second half before Marquis Hargrove hit a jumper from just inside the arch and was able to draw a foul, completing a three-point play to put the Matadors up 67-63. Hargove finished as the Matadors' second-leading scorer with 16 points on 5-for-10 shooting.

Yaxel Lendeborg ended the night with 10 points and six rebounds while Najeeb Muhammad had seven points and six assists.

The Matadors finish the Thanksgiving Classic hosting Grays Harbor on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
