Matadors torch Cochise with 107-point offensive barrage in rivalry rout

YUMA, Ariz. – Arizona Western College men's basketball (16-6, 6-1 ACCAC) delivered a dominant rivalry performance at The House, unleashing a relentless offensive attack in a 107-88 win over Cochise College on Saturday. The Matadors overwhelmed their conference rivals, building a double-digit lead by halftime and never looking back in a high-energy statement game.

The Matadors took command early, ignited by fast-paced ball movement and aggressive rebounding that set the tone for a true rivalry rout. Arizona Western pushed the tempo throughout the opening half, surging ahead by as many as 14 points before heading into the break with a 54-42 advantage following a late bucket by Matt Anglo. After intermission, the home side continued to pour it on, stretching the lead to 32 points midway through the second half on a Mario Brunetto three-pointer. The Matadors broke the century mark with five minutes remaining as Paora Winitana converted a second-chance jumper, putting the game out of reach and electrifying the Yuma crowd.

Marsai Mason powered the Matadors with a double-double, tallying 23 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals on 8-of-15 shooting. Off the bench, Mario Brunetto was a perfect 5-for-5 from downtown, finishing with 19 points and 3 rebounds. Matt Anglo played a team-high 35 minutes, recording 21 points, 5 assists and hitting 6-of-6 from the line. Engel Gutierrez posted 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists on efficient 8-of-15 shooting, while Paora Winitana nearly posted a double-double with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

Arizona Western's depth was on full display, as the bench outscored Cochise 43-18. The Matadors shot 55.6 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc, with five players reaching at least 15 points. On the glass, Arizona Western held a 38-28 rebounding edge and produced several second-chance opportunities. The team's balanced scoring and relentless pace kept the Apaches chasing all afternoon, underscoring the Matadors' firepower and collective execution in a high-stakes conference setting.

Despite the offensive output, Matador head coach Kyle Isaacs shared with Matador Sports Stream sideline reporter Alyssa Rosales after the game, that his Matadors still need some work on defense.

"We were way better in the second half," Isaacs said. "We just played very poorly in the late three to five minutes. It's something we have to continue to work at. On Monday, we start over and get ready for Wednesday. We know CSN can really score and we need to lock up on all aspects."

Rosales then aksed coached Isaacs about the play of sophomore Marsai Mason, who once again posted a double-double for the Matadors.

"He might be or at least should be national player of the week," Isaacs told Rosales. "For sure he'll be our conference player of the week, he's really been dominating and that's what we call him, the dominator."
