YUMA, Ariz. – Find ball carrier, tackle ball carrier. Arizona Western linebacker Roy Yancey spent the weekend doing just that in the team’s win at Eastern Arizona to open the season. The sophomore was named the Western States Football League Defensive Player of the Week.
Yancey led the Mats with a whopping 15 tackles (nine solo!). He also had one sack and three tackles-for-loss, and he was a big part in the Matador defense shutting out Eastern Arizona after halftime. Arizona Western erased a 14-point deficit with two defensive touchdowns in the third quarter on the way to a 21-14 win.
The Mats were ranked first in the initial NJCAA regular season poll earlier today. Now the team heads to Tucson to play Pima Community College Saturday night. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm, and the game will be broadcast live on 560 AM KBLU. The pregame show goes live at 6:50 pm.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
