YUMA, Ariz. – Being in first equals having a bullseye on your back. Everyone is gunning for you. The Arizona Western football team will keep wearing that bullseye with the release of the first NJCAA regular season poll. The Mats held onto the top spot after being voted first in the NJCAA Preseason Poll in August.
AWC (1-0 overall) opened the season on the road at Eastern Arizona College for a tough opening test. The Mats got out with a 21-14 win that included a double-digit comeback powered by defense in the second half.
The Mats are one of three ranked teams from the Western States Football League in the Top 20. Mesa moved up from 10th to sixth, and Snow climbed from 20th to 15th. East Mississippi, Garden City, Trinity Valley and Northwest Mississippi round out the top five.
This week, Arizona Western heads to Tucson to take on Pima. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm, and the game will be broadcast on 560 AM KBLU. The pregame show goes live at 6:50 pm.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
