YUMA, Ariz. – Fresh off the team’s biggest win of the season, Arizona Western College’s football team jumped up to 11th in the latest NJCAA poll. The Mats moved up four spots after beating then 10th ranked Scottsdale (now 17th) by double digits on Saturday. East Mississippi, Garden City, Iowa Western, Hutchinson and Northwest Mississippi make up the top five.
The Mats (4-2 overall, 2-1 Western States Football League) used a huge second quarter to open up a tight game against Scottsdale, and all three phases of the game made big plays in the 37-19 win. Down 10-7, the defense held Scottsdale out of the end zone early in the second quarter. Special teams blocked the field goal attempt, and the offense proceeded to score three straight touchdowns for a 28-10 lead.
Jadon Hayes was named the WSFL Player of the Week for a second straight week. He led the team with 20 carries for 140 yards and a touchdown. In the second half, he had 15 carries for 105 yards
The Mats are one of five ranked WSFL teams. Snow moved up one spot to eighth, and Eastern Arizona jumped from 12th to 10th (just in front of AWC). Scottsdale slid from 10th to 17th. Pima moved up one spot to 19th.
