YUMA, Ariz. – Opening on the road is tough. Doing so for two straight weeks? Even tougher. Yet the Arizona Western football team has picked up two road wins in the first two weeks of its season, and the Mats are 2-0 on the young season. AWC held onto the top spot in the NJCAA poll, although the gap between first and second shrank quite a bit this week.
The Mats grabbed six of the nine first place votes for 138 points. Second-ranked East Mississippi received the other three first place votes and trails AWC by three points (138 to 135).
AWC downed Pima 34-17 in a backyard brawl on Saturday night to win their conference opener. The Mats finished with 324 yards of offense while the defense had five sacks and seven tackles for loss. Plus, the Mats forced five turnovers.
Arizona Western (2-0 overall, 1-0 Western States Football League) won its season opener at Eastern Arizona in a non-conference matchup.
AWC is one of three ranked teams from the WSFL. Mesa stayed in the sixth spot while Snow moved up to 10th. East Mississippi (second), Trinity Valley (third), Iowa Western (fourth) and Northwest Mississippi round out the top five.
The Mats have a bye this week before hosting Eastern Arizona in a conference game on Saturday, September 23 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military members. Children 12 and under and AWC students and staff (with current school ID) get in for FREE!
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma. AWC leads the state in enrollment growth over the past 10 years and handed out more than 2,300 certificates and degrees in 2016-17.
