Climbing Slow, Climbing Steady

YUMA, Ariz. – After dropping two games early in the season that nearly knocked them out of the rankings, the Arizona Western College football team has slowly climbed back up, win by win, back into the top 10. AWC was ranked 10th in the latest NJCAA poll, released today. East Mississippi, Garden City, Iowa Western, Hutchinson, and Northwest Mississippi make up the top five.

AWC blew past Phoenix 48-7 over the weekend behind a dominant ground game. John Oliver and Kendon Walker combined for 344 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and the Matador defense only surrendered 114 yards of total offense. Outside of an early special teams gaffe that gave Phoenix a touchdown, AWC was never really threatened.

The Mats have won three straight and are 5-2 on the season. AWC is one game behind both Pima and Eastern Arizona in the Western States Football League, but they play both teams in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Four teams from the WSFL are ranked. Snow (6-1) is eighth, Eastern Arizona (6-1) is ninth, and Pima (4-1) is 18th.

This week, AWC is off for a bye week before closing the season with three tough games. Saturday, October 27th, the Mats host Snow at 2:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/military. Kids 12 and under and AWC students and staff get in FREE!

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
