YUMA, Ariz. – A week off will help the Arizona Western College football team get healthy and ready for a tough final three weeks of the regular season, but it also dropped the team one spot in the latest NJCAA Poll. The Mats moved from 10th to 11th. The top nine in the poll stayed the same, with East Mississippi, Garden City, Iowa Western, Hutchinson and Northwest Mississippi making up the top five.
AWC (5-2 overall, 3-1 Western States Football League) controls its own destiny in the race for the conference title. The Mats play all three teams either tied with them (Snow) or ahead of them in the standings (Pima and Eastern Arizona) in the next three weeks. All three are ranked, with Snow in eighth, Eastern Arizona in ninth and Pima in 14th.
The Mats have won three straight and finish with two of the final three at home. John Oliver (484 rushing yards), Kendon Walker (396 yards) and Jadon Hays (377 yards) form a three-headed monster at running back. Meanwhile, Troy’Von Johnson (23 receptions), Dallas Daniels (21 receptions), DeAndre Wallace (19 receptions) and Bryce Parker (12 receptions) have done the bulk of the receiving work. Quarterback Logan Byrd (83-144 for 977 passing yards) has improved throughout the season after a late start.
Arizona Western has been in the top 20 all season. The team’s highest rank was third in the preseason poll, and they dropped to 19th in the polls in September before creeping back to the top 10.
This week, AWC will host Snow in an afternoon game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for seniors/military. Kids 12 and under and AWC students and staff get in FREE!
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
