YUMA, Ariz. – After playing nine regular season games last season, the Arizona Western College football team is back to 11 games with a tough 2018 schedule lined up. The schedule features six games in Yuma and four on the road.
The Mats open the season on Friday, August 24 against New Mexico Military in a revival of an old WSFL matchup. The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. at Yuma Catholic instead of Veterans Memorial Stadium.
On Labor Day weekend, AWC travels to take on Georgia Military College on Saturday, September 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Mats host Arizona Christian’s JV team on Saturday, September 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. AWC’s last non-conference game is a matchup with Eastern Arizona College at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma on Saturday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m.
AWC dives into conference play on Saturday, September 22 by hosting Mesa at 7:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. AWC then heads out for two straight road games. The Mats are at Glendale on September 29 at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Scottsdale the following weekend at 7:00 p.m.
The regular season wraps up with three of AWC’s final four at home. First, the Mats host Phoenix at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. After a bye, the Mats will host Snow in an afternoon game on Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. AWC heads to Eastern Arizona on Saturday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m. before finishing up with Pima at home at 2:00 p.m.
The Mats have not lost a regular season game in the past two seasons on the way to back-to-back WSFL titles and trips to the NJCAA Football Championship game. AWC has been to nine straight bowl games under head coach Tom Minnick. The Mats finished as the NJCAA runners-up last season and were ranked third in the final poll.
Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona. The college boasts partnerships with all three state universities that include face-to-face classes in Yuma.
